Examination

The horse’s entire musculoskeletal system is examined to diagnose the underlying cause of symptoms — not merely to locate a region of pain.Below are the methods used when examining your horse.

General Assessment

An essential part of the examination involves the horse’s medical history and any previous or ongoing treatments. This is followed by a chiropractic examination performed by a certified veterinary chiropractor.

The horse is observed on the lunge in several gaits and, if necessary, on different surfaces.

The movement pattern and use of the topline are evaluated to identify biomechanical issues related to the spine and limbs.Questions considered include:

  • Does the horse tend to pace, cross-canter, or move on two tracks?
  • How is its rhythm and stride length?
  • Does it swing evenly to both sides?
  • Is shock absorption normal?

At the same time, it is assessed whether lameness could be contributing to the problem. If so, a lameness examination will be indicated.

Neurological Examination

After observing the horse in motion, a neurological examination and palpation of the muscles are carried out. These provide valuable information about the horse’s general condition and possible compensation patterns.

As with any veterinary examination, the horse’s conformation, posture, muscle symmetry, visible skeletal deviations, shoeing, and even tack fit are evaluated.

Unique Chiropractic Examination Technique

The distinctive aspect of chiropractic assessment is the technique known as motion palpation — a detailed evaluation of each joint’s ability to move normally.

Mobility is assessed for each vertebra individually as well as regionally.

This allows for a thorough understanding of the biomechanical connections between the pelvis, lumbar, thoracic, cervical, and poll regions. Based on these findings, it is determined which joint connections are not functioning optimally and therefore require treatment.

A first examination typically takes about 1½ hours, and follow-up treatments take around 1 hour.

Acupuncture or Laser Therapy

During the examination, it is also considered whether the horse would benefit from acupuncture or laser therapy as a supplementary treatment.
